THE IMPORTANCE OF RAW MEATY BONES

Raw meaty bones are an essential part of a species-appropriate raw diet for dogs and cats, supporting natural dental health, mental enrichment, joint support and biologically appropriate nutrition. Apart from common knowledge of what our pets ancestors thrived on there have are studies that prove a raw natural diet is healthier for dogs and cats.

"A carnivore in its natural environment consumes food high in animal protein, organs, and ‘animal fibre’ (indigestible or poorly digestible parts of animal carcases such as bone, cartilage, scales, fins, fur, feather, tendon, and teeth), and low in carbohydrates (Landry and Van Kruiningen, 1979; Knueven, 2013). "
"Performance in working dogs has been shown to improve on a carbohydrate-free diet (Kronfeld, 1973; Kronfeld et al, 1994), and a high fat, low carbohydrate diet may increase stamina and maximise energy production (Hill, 1998). It has been suggested that the high level of carbohydrates in processed commercial foods may be partially responsible for increased rates of diabetes and obesity in dogs and cats (Case, 2005; Hill, 2010)

PUPPIES & KITTENS AND THE DANGER OF EXCESS CALCIUM

Excessive calcium supplementation can pose a risk to growing puppies and kittens, particularly when added unnecessarily to an already balanced diet.

Because young animals have immature calcium regulation systems, they absorb calcium more passively than adults. This means they are less able to “switch off” calcium absorption when intake becomes excessive.

In growing puppies — especially large and giant breeds — excessive calcium intake during critical growth phases has been associated with developmental skeletal issues and abnormal bone growth. This is one reason balanced calcium-to-phosphorus ratios are so important during development.

For raw-fed puppies and kittens, calcium is ideally supplied through appropriately balanced raw meaty bones and species-appropriate diets rather than excessive standalone supplementation unless professionally advised. Potential issues associated with excessive calcium intake may include:

  • Abnormal skeletal development
  • Joint stress
  • Developmental orthopaedic issues
  • Digestive upset or constipation
  • Imbalanced mineral ratios

This does not mean calcium is dangerous calcium is absolutely essential for healthy growth, bone development and muscle function. The key issue is balance, appropriate sourcing, and avoiding excessive supplementation during rapid growth stages. That’s why using natural balanced raw meaty bones is a more biologically appropriate calcium source for growing puppies and kittens.

British Journal of Nutrition. A review titled “Factors that modify the effect of excess calcium on skeletal development in puppies” concluded that excess calcium intake is detrimental to growing skeletons and may contribute to developmental orthopaedic disease in puppies. Link here

IVIS Veterinary Nutrition. Veterinary nutrition literature published through IVIS explains that puppies under 6 months of age are unable to adequately protect themselves from excess calcium intake because passive intestinal absorption remains high during growth. Link here

How To Choose The Right Bones For Your Dog or Cat

  • Choosing the right raw meaty bone for your pet depends on their size, age, chewing style, jaw strength and raw feeding experience. The goal is to provide a bone that is:

    • Safe to chew
    • Appropriate for their size
    • Soft enough to consume
    • Nutritionally beneficial
    • Mentally enriching.

    WHAT TO AVOID

    • Large dense bones that cannot be eaten. Large dogs can eat large bones but even so there are large bones that should not be fed to even giant breeds.
    • Weight-bearing bones from large animals
  • Small Dogs & Puppies

Smaller mouths and developing teeth need softer, smaller bones. Best options:

    • Chicken wings
    • Chicken necks
    • Duck necks
    • Rabbit pieces
    • Lamb ribs

    These provide:

    • Calcium and phosphorus
    • Gentle chewing practice
    • Softer edible bone content
    • Confidence for beginner raw feeders

    MEDIUM DOGS

Medium-sized dogs can usually handle a wider range and size of bones these include

    Good options:

    • Turkey necks
    • Lamb necks
    • Chicken frames
    • Duck frames
    • Lamb flaps

  • If your dog is new to raw feeding, start simple. Dogs have digestive enzymes that can break down bones however this can be altered depending on what the dog has been fed.

Kibble can leech out the digestive enzymes causing digestive issues therefore we always advise go light on bones in the first few weeks. If your dog is kibble fed we advise sticking to the soft type bones such as duck frames, duck necks, chicken necks and duck feet.

    Great beginner choices:
    Small Dogs

    1. Chicken necks
    2. Duck Wing
    3. Duck necks
    4. Duck Feet
    5. Mutton Bird Frames
    6. Lamb ribs

    Large Dogs

    • Turkey Necks
    • Beef Brisket
    • Duck Frames
    • Lamb ribs

These are softer, easier to digest and less intimidating for new raw feeders.

  • Cats benefit from appropriately sized raw meaty bones as well. Cats should always receive bones appropriate for their jaw size.

    Great options:

    Benefits include:

    • Dental cleaning
    • Taurine-rich tissue
    • Mental enrichment
    • Natural chewing behaviour
  • A good raw meaty bone should:

    • Be raw (never cooked)
    • Be appropriately sized
    • Softer/more gristle for new chewers
    • Contain meat, connective tissue and cartilage
    • Encourage chewing instead of swallowing
    • Match your dog/cats chewing ability
    • Bones should be able be fully or almost fully consumed not just chewed.
  • Dog and cat allergies are often caused by over exposure to the same proteins or can be triggered by the foods consumed by the protein they are eating.
We have alternatives and have experienced excellent results with dogs with allergies or on elimination diets.

Why Raw Meaty Bones Are Essential for Dogs & Cats

  • Raw meaty bones are one of the most natural and biologically appropriate foods you can feed both dogs and cats. Long before processed kibble existed, canines and felines survived by consuming prey — including muscle meat, organs, connective tissue and bones. Raw meaty bones help replicate this natural diet while supporting physical and mental wellbeing.

  • Raw meaty bones are packed with highly bioavailable calcium and phosphorus — two essential minerals needed for:

    • Strong bones and teeth
    • Muscle function
    • Healthy nerve transmission
    • Growth and development
    • Joint support

Unlike many synthetic supplements, the minerals in raw bones occur in a natural balance the body is designed to absorb.

  • Dogs and cats are carnivores designed to consume raw animal foods. Feeding raw meaty bones mimics the natural prey model diet by providing vital nutrients for their health and wellbeing.

    • Meat
    • Bone
    • Cartilage
    • Ligaments
    • Marrow
  • Dogs and cats are instinctive chewers and hunters. Raw meaty bones provide:

    • Mental stimulation
    • Stress relief
    • Reduced boredom
    • Natural chewing satisfaction

Chewing releases calming endorphins and can help reduce destructive behaviours caused by boredom or frustration.

  • Dogs and cats are biologically designed to digest raw bones. Raw meaty bones lay a vital part of their diet and wellness and can help:

    • Clear gut and digestive system tract
    • Produce firmer stools
    • Aid anal gland health
    • Slow down eating
    • Improve digestive satisfaction

Raw bones also provide natural nutrients that are often missing from heavily processed diets.
