THE IMPORTANCE OF RAW MEATY BONES

Raw meaty bones are an essential part of a species-appropriate raw diet for dogs and cats, supporting natural dental health, mental enrichment, joint support and biologically appropriate nutrition. Apart from common knowledge of what our pets ancestors thrived on there have are studies that prove a raw natural diet is healthier for dogs and cats.

"A carnivore in its natural environment consumes food high in animal protein, organs, and ‘animal fibre’ (indigestible or poorly digestible parts of animal carcases such as bone, cartilage, scales, fins, fur, feather, tendon, and teeth), and low in carbohydrates (Landry and Van Kruiningen, 1979; Knueven, 2013). PUPPIES & KITTENS AND THE DANGER OF EXCESS CALCIUM

Excessive calcium supplementation can pose a risk to growing puppies and kittens, particularly when added unnecessarily to an already balanced diet.

Because young animals have immature calcium regulation systems, they absorb calcium more passively than adults. This means they are less able to “switch off” calcium absorption when intake becomes excessive.

In growing puppies — especially large and giant breeds — excessive calcium intake during critical growth phases has been associated with developmental skeletal issues and abnormal bone growth. This is one reason balanced calcium-to-phosphorus ratios are so important during development.

For raw-fed puppies and kittens, calcium is ideally supplied through appropriately balanced raw meaty bones and species-appropriate diets rather than excessive standalone supplementation unless professionally advised. Potential issues associated with excessive calcium intake may include:

Abnormal skeletal development
Joint stress
Developmental orthopaedic issues
Digestive upset or constipation
Imbalanced mineral ratios

This does not mean calcium is dangerous calcium is absolutely essential for healthy growth, bone development and muscle function. The key issue is balance, appropriate sourcing, and avoiding excessive supplementation during rapid growth stages. That’s why using natural balanced raw meaty bones is a more biologically appropriate calcium source for growing puppies and kittens.

British Journal of Nutrition. A review titled “Factors that modify the effect of excess calcium on skeletal development in puppies” concluded that excess calcium intake is detrimental to growing skeletons and may contribute to developmental orthopaedic disease in puppies. Link here

IVIS Veterinary Nutrition. Veterinary nutrition literature published through IVIS explains that puppies under 6 months of age are unable to adequately protect themselves from excess calcium intake because passive intestinal absorption remains high during growth. Link here

- Large dense bones that cannot be eaten. Large dogs can eat large bones but even so there are large bones that should not be fed to even giant breeds.

Smaller mouths and developing teeth need softer, smaller bones. Best options:

If your dog is new to raw feeding, start simple. Dogs have digestive enzymes that can break down bones however this can be altered depending on what the dog has been fed.

Kibble can leech out the digestive enzymes causing digestive issues therefore we always advise go light on bones in the first few weeks. If your dog is kibble fed we advise sticking to the soft type bones such as duck frames, duck necks, chicken necks and duck feet.
