Why your dog or cat needs emu organs

Why your dog or cat needs emu organs

When it comes to raw feeding your dog or cat, organs are some of the most nutrient-dense foods you can feed, but organs from Emu have some unique traits compared with typical organs from Cattle, Lamb, or Chicken.
RogueRaw specialises in primal raw feeding and we are Australi's largest raw feeding specialists with a large variety of rare and exotic raw food products for your pets.

One of our most popular sources is emu product.  Much of the nutritional value of emu comes from the emu’s biology: they are large, athletic birds with extremely efficient oxygen and fat metabolism.

Below are some interesting nutritional and functional differences.

1. Higher Iron & Oxygen-Transport Support

Emu organs (especially heart and lungs) tend to be rich in heme iron and myoglobin.

Why this happens

  • Emus are endurance runners capable of long distances.
  • Their tissues require strong oxygen transport and storage systems.

Benefits

  • Supports red blood cell production
  • Helps with anemia or low energy animals
  • May benefit high performance dogs

Compared with:

  • Chicken organs: generally lower iron
  • Lamb/beef: still high, but emu often has a strong concentration relative to fat content.

2. Leaner Organ Fat Profile

Even though emus produce Emu oil, their organs themselves are usually leaner than lamb or beef organs.

Benefits

  • Easier digestion for dogs sensitive to fatty organs
  • Lower saturated fat load
  • Good option for dogs with:
    • pancreatitis history
    • weight issues
    • sensitive gut

Compared with:

  • Lamb organs: often quite fatty
  • Beef organs: moderate fat
  • Chicken organs: moderate but less nutrient-dense

3. High Natural Taurine in Heart

Emu heart tends to be a very good taurine source.

Taurine supports:

  • Heart health
  • Eye health
  • Nervous system function

This is especially valuable for:

  • dogs with cardiac concerns
  • large breeds
  • working dogs

While beef heart is also high in taurine, emu heart is often leaner while still taurine rich.

4. Wild-Type Amino Acid Profile

Emus are ratites (ancient running birds) with a diet and metabolism different from domesticated poultry.

Their organs tend to provide:

  • Strong collagen support amino acids
  • Good B vitamin profile
  • High bioavailable minerals

Compared with:

  • Chicken organs: domesticated, often lower mineral density due to rapid growth systems.

5. Hypoallergenic Protein Source

One of the biggest practical advantages.

Because most dogs have never been exposed to emu, it is considered a novel protein.

This makes emu organs useful for dogs with sensitivities to:

  • Chicken
  • Cattle
  • Lamb

Used in:

  • elimination diets
  • allergy protocols
  • gut healing programs
